Dota 2 Omega League launched with $590,000 prize purse

Tournament organisers WePlay! Esports and Epic Esports Events have coordinated with a group of European Dota 2 teams to launch a competition labelled Omega League.

The tournament will be separated into two regions, namely Europe and Americas. A cash purse of $550,000 (£436,821) will be apportioned for the European ladder while the Americas region will feature a combined $40,000 (£31,768.80) in prize winnings.

The Omega League playbill features eight leading organisations including Ninjas in Pyjamas, Team Liquid, Virtus.pro, FlyToMoon, Evil Geniuses, Team Secret, Alliance, Nigma, Natus Vincere, and the 2018 & 2019 The International champions OG Esports.

The league promises to bring premier “competition, production, and content” to the Dota 2 community which was deprived of its annual The International event, which is now slated for 2021. Open qualifiers will begin on July 20th, with its main event running from August 14th to September 6th.

Vitaliy “Nexius” Bozhko, Lead Esports Manager at WePlay! Esports, commented on the venture in a release: “We are excited about the opportunity to work on interesting ideas and very curious about the reaction of the community. Our team and colleagues from Epic Esports Events are giving this event everything that we have. I really hope the audience will enjoy the results. The event takes place on the dates when we are used to seeing The International, and that impacts the level of responsibility we feel about OMEGA LEAGUE.”

WePlay! Esports will produce the English broadcast for Omega League while studio broadcast group RuHub will manage and stream the Russian-language broadcast for the event.

“The Omega League is just another example of the esports industry being able to pivot during the coronavirus outbreak. Even better is that this event promises to bring the thrill of high-level competition which The International would have provided this summer, had it not been for the mandated lockdowns.
